Heating and cooling

Propane, or R290, is a key refrigerant used in some of the latest heat pumps. But it is highly flammable. To reduce the risk of it forming an ignitable mixture with air, heat pump company Vaillant and researchers in Germany have come up with a safety coating that can adsorb escaping propane.

Heat pump subscriptions could make the devices more affordable for people, according to a new report discussed in The Times.
