US Army base goes geothermal: The Reengineer Monitor #72
Heat pump sales bump, solar-powered streetlights - and more!

Heating and cooling
Heat pump sales jumped by 31% in Germany and 21% in France during the first quarter of 2026, according to new data from the European Heat Pump Association. Heat pumps, like solar panels, are seeing renewed interest as the US’s war with Iran continues to inflate fossil fuel prices.
An army base in the US state of Louisiana has installed a geothermal heating system as part of efforts to heighten resilience and reduce dependency on fossil fuels. This is despite so-called US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s claim that the US military is “not in the business” of fighting climate change.
