Heating and cooling

A new study finds that electric fans are ineffective at keeping people cool in temperatures above 33C because they dry the skin and reduce the cooling effect of sweating. This is especially problematic for older people, the authors say.

In leafy Shropshire, locals have submitted a planning application for a wind turbine that could power a future heat network in the market town of Bishop’s Castle. The idea is to connect the turbine to large air source heat pumps able to supply 4.5 gigawatt hours of heat to 160 properties annually. Solar panels and thermal storage devices would also be part of the system.
