The create a "pool" of hot air between the blinds and the window and heat only leaks into the dwelling at a much lower rate. This is particularly true for insulating blackout blinds - they have a metal foil to stop sunlight and a hollow hexagonal structure to trap air.
Thanks, Michael! Yes - and in some properties where it's not possible to access the exterior easily to retrofit shutters / awnings, highly reflective internal blinds or window covers could be the easiest solution. It's something I'm thinking of doing in my own house during future heatwaves.
